BLURB:

When Celina Leviet escapes the brutal home invasion that kills her husband, she’s left with a bullet in her gut and vengeance in her heart. An alluring demon, Mekaisto, offers an irresistible deal—in exchange for her soul, he’ll let her live long enough to get her revenge, but she must hunt and kill the murderers herself.

After sealing the contract, Celina digs into her husband’s past for clues about his murder, and what she uncovers makes her question everything she thought she knew about him.

His company never existed.
His family history was a lie.

And he was involved with The Lumen, a shadowy religious order whose members know too much about demons. As the life she thought she knew crumbles around her, Mekaisto’s charms become harder to resist. Forced to face a horrible truth, Celina struggles against her late husband’s betrayal and the dark seduction of the devil she knows.

Her breath came faster, and he could smell what she wanted before she even knew what it was. “Please, Kai—I’m yours. I want more. I want everything you can give me.”

The wave of lust heating his body could have burned a city to the ground. “Well, now,” he whispered in her ear as he stood, lifting her up with him, “I need to oblige such begging with a reward.”

BIO

I’m passionate about writing, reading, photo manipulation artwork, animals, anime/manga, video games, the fandom world of TV shows and movies, and stuff like that. I’m a proud Ravenclaw: I’ve always been sorted into this house, but the recent Pottermore sorting placed me in Gryffindor―I don’t care since the Sorting Hat couldn’t consider my choice, so I identify with Ravenclaw, and that’s where I’ll remain!

I have two main hobbies: writing and creating book covers. I’m also a gamer (Diablo, Zelda, Final Fantasy), enjoy listening to music (and always singing along to Disney), have a passion for Japanese culture, and adore reading. I love anime/manga, Japanese Dramas and consider myself a proud fan of many different TV shows including Buffy, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin, Game of Thrones, Outlander, etc.

I wrote my first story when I was 12 years old (and we’ll never talk about that story), but started writing three years later. Since then, I always write, and this particular novel is my 19th story. It’s always been a dream to be a published author, and I can happily say I’ve reached that goal―I plan on continuing writing and publishing for the rest of my days.

Excerpt

(This story has two points of view )

“I am a demon, Celina, and above all else, demons love the hunt.” He smirked when her eyes widened.

“So, you see having sex with someone as a hunt?”

He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “By your expression, I would say you still do not quite understand.”

“It’s your twisted logic.”

Interesting…

“I take my time, stalk my prey first, count the number of breaths she takes, imagine her screams…”

She arched an eyebrow. “That’s not at all creepy.”

Kai ignored her. “I am a creature of infinite time; the world creeps by, yet an intimate moment is so fleeting, it feels as though it is gone in less than a second.” He stopped, expecting an interruption again, but she stayed silent. “The pleasure is heightened by the danger, and in the throes of passion, I could lose my control and revert to the form least likely to be found pleasurable by my … partner?” He lost himself in the images in his mind, pinning down Celina’s body, taking her in a way she would never be able to recreate with a mere mortal man. “Hunting is simple. There is always one in the crowd that stands out—rarely is it the one searching for the one-night stand—no…” Kai locked his eyes with hers and goose bumps rose on her arms and legs. “No, the one unsure of what society wants her to be, the one who is desperate to be loved and appreciated. She is the one I seek.”

“So, social outcasts are your type?”

His eyes pierced her until he could see through her mind again, to all those curious little fantasies.

He smiled. “It’s about finesse, Celina. I listen to her, and as she speaks more confidently, I brush a hand over her skin”—his hand skimmed Celina’s neck as he brushed her back—“just enough so she shivers with anticipation of what my lips would feel like in the same spot.” He delved into Celina’s mind as his words worked against her disdain for him. “Then I caress her in a way she won’t notice, but her subconscious will let her lean into, let her mind take over and her body will beg for more.”

“She’d notice if…” She followed his gaze to his hand on her knee.

“Are you certain?” He’d worked his own body into a sensual frenzy as he’d drawn her into his web.

She stared at him, her cheeks flushing. “I—”

“Eventually, I suggest a night filled with pleasure.” He couldn’t contain his smile as he moved closer. “I keep touching her in small ways—maintaining physical contact at all times.” His hand inched up her side, until he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She sucked in a breath and he cupped her cheek.

He sat close to her and her scent calmed and excited him at the same time.

“Kai?” Her voice wavered.

“Sex is fleeting.” He took her chin and drew her close. “But intimacy is endless, a continuous moment of gentle touches”—his hand dropped back to her knee, and then made its way up her thigh until she let out a small gasp—“personal boundaries broken, and pleasures that go beyond sex.”

She sat as if frozen. “It’s still a one-night stand.”

“Mine last longer—and you reveal not only your body.” His hand moved to the middle of her chest. “When you are intimate with a demon, you reveal your soul. You make yourself vulnerable and open.”

“Considering you’ll have my soul sometime soon, I’m not giving you a free sample.” She drew away from him and stood. “I won’t be your prey tonight.”

Another surge of heat rushed through him, but he pushed it down with a long, deep breath. “You would set me loose on another human?”

She glared at him. “I wasn’t aware I had a choice about what you do outside of our deal. This would be on you, not me.”

“You think you control what I do within our deal?”

She rubbed her arms when he stood. “Not when you say it like that.”

“Celina…” He stopped in front of her and leaned into her personal space, drawing a lungful of a scent he would only ever associate with her.

He wrapped his arms around her, swallowing the shiver that shook her body. “What are you—?”

“Let’s play, Celina. I can assure you, you will not regret a night in my arms.”

I want you… Against all my instincts, I need you close.

Celina pushed him as hard as she could, and he withdrew as disappointment withered his gaze.

“Let me go, Mekaisto.”

You are trembling again, my dove… Is it because you are scared you will give in? How far can I push you until you bend?

“What if I say no?”

She glared at him, but Kai’s smile widened. He could feel, even smell, the pulsing between her legs begging him to take her.

“Isn’t it enough you’re getting my life and my soul? Now you need my body, too?” She pushed against him again, but he only held tighter, unable to let her go. “Why are you doing this? I just lost my husband, found out things that break my heart. I can’t sit and flirt with you.”

“I am offering you the chance to forget.”

“No!” Her hands clenched to fists as she shoved even harder against his chest. “No! You want to take everything I have left.”

He grabbed her wrists, pushed her back on the sofa, and pinned her down, his body hovering over her. “What is your life without your body?” He tilted his head and flicked his tongue across his lips. “You never asked what selling your life and soul meant specifically. Allow me to enlighten you now.” He moved until his face loomed only an inch or so from her face and her breath caught. He let go of her wrists, but his gaze pinned her to the spot.

“What?” Her voice ached just above a whisper.

“I own every inch of you … body and soul.”

Her face flushed and her lips trembled. “I never agreed to that!”

“You agreed to living. The details did not matter to you.”

“I was dying! You told me I didn’t have much time left, so it—”

His smile widened. “Even if you had all the time in the world, it would not have made a difference. Humans never read the fine print.”

Excerpt:

She steeled herself against another sneeze until her eyes watered, then she shook her head. The creeping, crawling irritation under her skin brought a wave of reminders of spells gone wrong because of the distraction of a sudden itch or sneeze she couldn’t stifle.

“Not at all. I can’t imagine you’d know the difference between a therapist and a hooker because I have no doubt your claims of experience—no, expertise—as a lurve machine are much exaggerated.” She plucked the lemon wedge from the edge of his glass and bit into the flesh as she wrinkled her nose again.

His gaze danced over her face, and his eyes flashed with either amusement or danger…or desire.

She shivered a little in the warm room.

“Just let it go, silly girl. Sneezes are like orgasms. An unstoppable force—though hardly a…delight.” He watched another drip making its way back to his drink from his nail, apparently bored with their conversation.

But she knew better. “Whatcha drinkin’, my vampire friend?” She cooed the words as she twirled her hair around her finger in a playful gesture designed to annoy him as much as he’d irritated her, and nearly let loose a giggle as his expression turned sour.

“My drink.”

“Which is…?”

His eyes flared red for a second at her words. “Something you wouldn’t like.”

“Perhaps you mistake my love of tomatoes.” She kept her flirtatious tone in place and leant to rest her hand on his arm.

He bumped his fist against the table. “Keep your voice down, angelcakes. Can’t a man abide by his principles in peace?”

Glancing out at the dark sky and the pin-prick stars stretching into the unknown distance, she sighed. “A man, Vincent? I thought you’d got over that pipe dream.”

“I am a man.” He ground out the words.

“You’re a vegan vampire, trapped on an old heap of a space station for maybe the rest of your days. That’s a long time.” She spared a look for his tomato juice. “Although maybe not quite so long if you were to give in to your basic instincts and get rid of anyone who annoyed you—which is everyone. At least then you’d be alone with your indignity and plant-based thirst-quenchers.”

He let loose a short, mirthless laugh. “Just me, you, and tomatoes. And you’re a witch who can’t do magic without sneezing and breaking out in an itchy rash.” He shrugged at her, his grin rueful. “What a pair we make.”

What a pair indeed.

Part 4

A tear slipped down my cheek at the idea of being the woman any man conquered, at what I’d allowed to happen. At what I’d done.

To Jake.

I brushed my palm over my face. It didn’t matter what I expected Mr. Brian’s behaviour to be with his overnight guests. I had no business being there to find out. That was the start and the end of it.

I warmed again, glad he couldn’t see me and my fifty shades of blush. Then I swallowed against rising nausea, my voice muffled by the trembling hand I pressed across my mouth.

Time to be the cliché. “Do you…. Ah, do you…. Um, did I mention Jake to you at all?”

“Jake?” His voice rose with emotion. Curiosity? Worry? Irritation or annoyance? “Jake Who?”

Yeah. Irritation. I cleared my throat. “Jake Forrester.”

“Forrester?” He appeared to be considering the word before he barked out a sharp question. “Dr. Forrester? Why would you mention him?”

I counted the seconds of sudden silence until a gentle knock.

“Maggie, are you okay? Do you mean you need a doctor? Stay there, I’m coming in.”

The handle above my head gave a small squeak of protest, and the luxurious carpet rubbed a slight burn against the backs of my thighs as the opening door pushed me forwards. I took a quick breath, inhaling new-carpet smell. My head came up as Mr. Brian squeezed into my line of sight. He’d found pyjama bottoms since the last time we were in the same room.

“Different Forrester, I think.” I smiled, but the weak attempt merely pulled the corners of my mouth. “Jake Forrester is a landscape gardener and tree specialist— drives a van covered in pictures of flowers. He always jokes his name made him do it—you know, Forrester. Gardens? You must have seen it. Sometimes he drops me off at work.” I pressed my lips together before I descended further into nervous babbling. Talking too much about Jake threatened to open up every floodgate holding my confused emotions in check.

Mr. Brian’s eyebrows knitted together, and his forehead creased. “Okay.” He paused, jaw tightening “Well, I can take you to see a doctor anyway. I’ll phone the practice. See if they can fit you in.” He slid back out of the overgrown cupboard, and the memory-lane whir of an old-school rotary phone almost convinced me I was sitting at my mother’s feet with my crayons while she caught up on all the latest gossip.

Oh God! Mum! She’d be mortified if she knew.

I slumped in defeat. I’d never be innocent of anything again.

Mr. Brian’s voice filtered through to me. “Hello. Yes, I wondered if any of the doctors had an appointment free today? My wife doesn’t seem to be quite herself.” I jerked in shock at his words. His wife? That presented a disturbing and unwelcome promotion from personal assistant. Mr. Brian continued. “What? No, not really, but if he’s the last one with an appointment free, we’ll see him. Yes. Yes, I’m aware it’s a bank holiday…. Fine. Thank you for your help.” The call ended with the mostly forgotten, satisfying clatter of a receiver into a cradle.

Confusion buzzed through me. Waking up naked in someone else’s bed didn’t constitute a marriage agreement in anyone’s world. Propelled, finally, into action, I stood on shaky legs to dress in the creased clothing I’d scooped from the floor by his bed.

Walk of shame time.

Finding myself in the unenviable and inexplicable position of dressing in someone else’s clothes—apparently pre-worn for my convenience—added a whole new dimension of madness to the morning.

I crept from the wardrobe ten minutes later to find the bed made, the curtains drawn back, and the door to the ensuite bathroom wide open in either invitation or silent mockery of my earlier faux pas.

After lowering myself to the floor, I commando shimmied my way across the large area, peering under every item of furniture where my handbag might comfortably fit, and even into some spaces where it wouldn’t.

My hunt proved short but thorough. Stylish dark wood furniture became less overbearing against cream walls and sumptuous soft fabrics, but the complete lack of cupboards, drawers, and usual assorted knickknack clutter identified minimalist living as the ideal solution when a forgetful person couldn’t remember if they’d put something down where it didn’t belong.

The desire to continue to locate my stuff coupled with the chinking of plates and distant radio of someone else’s morning routine drew me to the bedroom door. I all- but-floated on silent sock-covered feet across luxury carpet and down the stairs.

The entrance hall presented another huge space without much in the way of furniture, except for an expensive-looking, expansive chest of drawers, pretty much perfect for hiding handbags—or bodies. I almost laughed at the insane direction of my thoughts. It’s only Mr. Brian. I’m safe with him.

I started towards it, but an oversized wedding photography canvas occupying acres of wall space captured my attention instead. My gaze skimmed across pale blue eyes devoid of celebratory sparkle and onto beautifully teased fairy-tale ringlets.

Some people. I had no clue why they transformed entire surfaces into costly, larger-than-life-size shrines to themselves. I brought my fingers to my lightly padded cheekbones in self-conscious comparison with the bride.

I flicked a glance back over the picture intrigued by the representation of beauty and idealism, and thoughts of finding my things came to a brain-jarring stop.

It was me.

She.

Was.

Me.

I didn’t recognise the perfection of the stylist-sculpted, milk-chocolate-toned hair or the smooth makeup concealing my smattering of freckles. It all looked far removed from my usual freshly washed, let’s go! appearance, and the forced smile in the photograph totally made my face appear plastic.

Yet it remained inarguably me.

I swayed, losing my balance, before sitting with a thump on the step. Okay. I clawed my thoughts together. A massive picture of me in my boss’s home coloured things a little differently. It’s only Mr. Brian. I’m safe with him.

Maybe.

As my manufactured confidence began to ebb, I spared a glance for the groom, finally able to notice one present at all, before peering closer. The man gazing at me with stark adoration in his devastating deep brown eyes was Mr. Brian.

Part 3

Not knowing where I’d woken up, or how I found myself on a first-name basis with my boss required more of a reason than a simple night out. A risky one-night stand suggested more than simple trolling for a no-strings dalliance, more than being in a mood to throw away everything I’d worked for. It also suggested a stomach- turning about-face in my moral code.

I smothered a ridiculous involuntary giggle lest he heard my madness through the door, then sat, unable to even form anything but repetitive thoughts about the man who insisted on being so formally addressed at the office, yet appeared happy to laze about naked with me in his personal time.

I tensed to redirect my thoughts and dug my fingers into the plushest carpet in the world, then wiped my sweaty palms on the pile, smoothing over my guilt. Fear and insanity warred within me, stealing both my breath and my determination to focus. After all, no stable person woke up with her boss and spent time debating the event with herself before she considered her exit. No sane person who woke in the arms of her boss by surprise, anyway. My confused, traitorous heart stuttered, and I sucked a large inhale to quash ballooning terror over my mental health and every element of my future.

I’d never be able to meet his eyes or take his dictation ever again.

Note to self: You might have been taking his dictation all night long.
Naked. Oh. Dear. Sweet. God. Naked.
Note to self: Stop taking notes.
Heat flamed up my face. I needed to stop thinking about optional clothing before

I set myself on fire. My skin blistered under a new wave of heat, and I flapped my hands near my face, the gesture both overly girly and ineffective at calming my thoughts. Mr. Brian wouldn’t remain as friendly if I spontaneously combusted so near his suits.

Dressing and leaving, not playing my own private video loop of my boss without his clothes, topped my agenda. I scoffed then dealt my face a quick mental slap for good measure and greater focus

I should have had only one focus.

Jake.

Maybe Mr. Brian had a simple explanation, and I only needed to ask. Perhaps he brought me home with him to look after me. I might have taken ill, then…tripped, and ended up lying in his bed. After all my clothes disintegrated.

I gave my head another shake, almost as though I might dislodge some common sense in there.

Would I do that? Was I really that girl after all those years? What had I done? I blew out a deep breath of shame. As I rubbed my face, my ring caught on my skin in reprimand. I ignored it, tucking my hand behind me instead.

I glanced at the light rather than look at his suits again. More horror washed through me in one giant wave. I had to work with the owner of those clothes. Every aspect of my life depended on him and the wage he paid me. My finances, my home, and now the stability of my marriage—even if Jake and I had always been more friends with benefits than soul mates.

I choked back another nervous giggle but sounded like a cat with a hairball. “Maggie?” Mr. Brian knocked lightly on the door. “Are you okay, sweetheart?”

Sweetheart?

Something in me melted a little. For a moment, and a reason I couldn’t define, I wanted to be his sweetheart.

I gave myself a quick mental shake. If I stayed quiet and carried on ignoring him, maybe he’d get fed up and go away.

I crossed my fingers in a childish gesture of misplaced faith. If I could develop the magic ability to erase every moment since I woke up, I’d never speak or move again—not even to take a breath. I parted my lips and allowed the shallowest inhale ever.

Baby steps on the not-breathing thing.

“Yes?” I tried not to let my mounting dread at what I’d done show in my voice, preventing a tremor before it ever emerged.

“Can I get you anything?” His uncharacteristic concern ate at me, as acidic as any guilt.

He should have been the type to get rid of his latest conquest before dawn. And I should have been the type to stay faithful.

Part 2

“Soooo.” I drew the word out as I fished for the perfect way to phrase my question. It didn’t come, so I piled lobotomy-inspiring humiliation on top of already unbearable shame. “Did we have a good time last night? What did we do? Did we, um, drink a lot? Drink at all? Did we have a drink together?”

Jake. Oh, dear God…Jake.

I folded further into myself as each uncomfortable question spilled from my lips, adding ever more excruciating levels of horror to the start of my day. In error, I risked another quick look at him, seeing far more of his body than I ever anticipated glimpsing.

I folded my arms in a quick self-conscious shield, trying to hide everything he’d already caught a pretty good view of. Better late than never.

My mouth took on unexpected autonomy, unsure if it should express misery or amusement without adequate guidance from my brain, and I fought to twist my lips out of a small, inappropriate smile before I refocused my wandering gaze on the bridge of his nose. Or his cheekbone. Or the tiny freckle high above his eye. Anywhere but somewhere else.

He sighed, the heavy sound at odds with his earlier amusement. “Drinking? What we did? Oh, the same thing we do every night…Pinky.”

Every night? Startled by his words, I met his eyes again. The flint-like coldness drew a painful shiver through me. No laughter there.

“Try to take over the world.” My whispered reply escaped on autopilot.

What in God’s name was I doing or thinking? Well, clearly not thinking. Try to take over the world. I struggled against a dry heave as the white noise anxiety in my head threatened to drown out everything else, smothering any chance of rational thought. I needed to ignore everything I’d said to this point and hope we could both move forward in our professional me-receiving-just-enough-money-to-scrape-by relationship. As for what I’d done, or why I’d arrived in his bed in the first place, I had no thoughts on that.

I pushed images of home aside. I’d deal with everything else later.

Mr. Brian continued watching me, his eyes growing wider. “Pinky.” he murmured, his tone thoughtful. “Pinky?” The heavy question in his voice reawoke my lazy instinct of self-preservation, and I readied for flight when his eyes focused on mine again as if he expected a response to something he hadn’t asked.

His answer about the previous night hadn’t helped me. Instead, he’d reverted to being lost in a world of his own and repeating a weird nickname. Still, his moment of distraction worked better than a written invitation to be on my way. The only way. Home.

I took my deepest breath of the morning. “Listen, I should get dressed. I probably need to head out.”

Casting my gaze over the floor, I scraped the discarded female clothes into my arms. They weren’t familiar from the previous day, and the form-fitting material that screamed an expensive price tag contradicted everything about my usual style— where style was just a synonym for the discount lines I could afford. Still, forgetting the exact outfit I’d dragged from the depths of my wardrobe, and why, paled when I considered the entirety of my position and everything else I failed to recall. Holding the unidentified garments in strategic placement to hide as much of myself as possible, I backed towards a door that stood ajar. A moment alone would give me time to collect my thoughts. Collect them, glue the fragments together again, and force my rational self to take control.“I’ll just use the bathroom.” I flashed my brightest fake smile at the furthest wall, careful to avoid any accidental glance at Mr. Brian, and slipped through the doorway into solitude. A small sigh of relief escaped me as I took my first step across the threshold. As soon as I sorted things with Mr. Brian, I’d be able to go home. I pressed the door closed without a sound, plunging myself into darkness as I reached for a light switch.

My patting on the wall grew more frantic when I couldn’t find one, until Mr. Brian’s puzzled voice came from the other room. “I’ve got it.”

I brought my hands to my eyes, squinting between my fingers in the sudden bright light. Stepping further into the room, I took in the layout and…bloody hell. I’d walked into a wardrobe. More precisely, a wardrobe the size of a small country.

Disoriented by the unfamiliar sights and expensive perfume smells, I stumbled. Male and female clothes hung in an ordered fashion in front of me, like I’d stepped through a portal to a high-end shop where a sale per month paid the rent for the next three.

Beautiful, luxurious clothes. And more shoes than I knew existed. I leant forwards, half expecting—hoping—for a pair of ruby slippers to be among them, and bit the inside of my cheek. Nice thought, but simply willing myself home and clicking my heels wouldn’t solve my current situation.

The bare skin of my back squeaked uncomfortably down the length of the smoothly painted door as I sank into the sitting position of a rag doll. Drawing my knees up, I allowed my head to fall against them, and a raw wave of despair washed through me.

Hiding in a wardrobe with my boss outside the door along with a bed I’d shared with him—naked—left me as prime candidate for demotion to chief coffee maker, if not taking up a new career as the local cat lady, not to mention the divorce proceedings I must have inadvertently started.

Di-vorce.

Two syllables, but a bloody big word, and no less than I deserved looking at the evidence around me. Circumstantial evidence, the ever supportive yet always biased voice of my inner monologue whispered. Fresh panic began a slow, delicate bloom in the darkest corner of my soul, but I smothered it. I could only handle one issue at a time, and the most pressing of those existed outside the wardrobe door. A groan forced its way up from somewhere near my toes, filling my chest and stifling my shallow breaths. I’d surely created one of those self-defining life moments that would flash past my eyes when I walked into a final, welcoming light. God, I hoped not. Being forced to relive the shameful experience would not improve it. I glanced at the clothes again before turning away, ignoring all of them.

Outwardly, I remained still, counting the steady beats inside my chest. Possibly for hours. Minutes, at the least. Until my butt cheeks froze to numbness and my clenched jaw muscles ached. Inwardly, anxiety threatened to drown out my thoughts again as I ransacked my brain in an attempt to recall each moment of the previous evening.

All of my memories of very normal activities remained, right up to swallowing stupid amounts of painkillers for a headache throbbing with a pulse of its own and the ensuing desire to get to bed and sleep it off. After that, nothing. No recollection of arriving…somewhere—a place that must have been Mr. Brian’s house—and no idea why I might have done something so stupid in the first place.

I ran a hand through the bird’s nest of tangled curls on my head, my restless agitation threatening to leave a mass of Gordian knots in its wake. Stupid, stupid. At least my version of stupid only meant possible career-limiting embarrassment around my boss rather than meeting a grisly end. A walking squirm of a cliché, rather than a mortuary statistic.

Note to self: Bright sides.

Chapter 1 Part 1

His knee rested against the back of my leg. A possessive arm wrapped over my waist, and a forehead nestled against my hair. Jake must have arrived home earlier than he expected from the stag weekend and melded to me during the night. We lay skin against skin, and I relaxed into his hold as warmth and familiarity seeped from him. The bubble of safety only my husband could provide surrounded me.

A smile tugged the corner of my lips as naughty thoughts of pleasure yet-to- come flashed through my head. I didn’t even bother to open my eyes as I wriggled around to return his hug, being sure to inject enough movement to bounce him awake. His chest rose and fell against my cheek with his every breath, and his heartbeat thudded in my ear. Home was where that heart was.

“Good morning, Maggie.” His melted chocolate voice, still drowsy with sleep, tickled my neck.

Not Jake.

Panic jolted me as my eyes flew open, and I launched over the side of the bed, failing in my attempt to look away as I did so. With the long glance I took by mistake, I’d require brain bleach to scrub him from my mind. I huddled out of his line of sight with my stare—strong enough to have burnt a hole through the man—firmly fixed on unfamiliar carpet.

Bloody hell. My boss. All of him. In the bed I’d exited at warp speed.

I risked another quick glance in his direction. He lay propped on his side, dark hair tousled, smiling at me in a new lazy way. Bloody, bloody hell. I repeat, my boss. My boss, Will Brian.

Never Will Brian, always Mr. Brian. I corrected myself to the office formality he insisted on as I tried to look at him without seeing anything but his face. Holy chest skin, Batman. Well-defined muscular temptation in flesh form. Mr. Brian with really sexy bedhead. Bloody hell, again.

The horror crawling through me shut down all rational thought, narrowing my entire focus to the bedroom. His bedroom?

One room.

Me.

Him.

Nothing else.

The devil had woken up with frostbite. It was the only possible explanation to my world going mad. I inhaled a shaky breath, my brain stuck on one thought. Mr. Brian. Surely, I harboured zero attraction to him? Especially as he favoured issuing orders to me in a snappy coffee-breath voice in our usual day-to-day routine. Waking in his arms was quite the quantum leap from our normal yes, Mr. Brian, of course, Mr. Brian, I’ll hold all your calls, Mr. Brian relationship.

I closed my eyes against the view, although it didn’t help me ignore him. His image had seared itself to the inside of my eyelids, and no girl wanted a permanent reminder of her boss.

Really. No attraction, whatsoever. None at all. Because I’d never noticed his tight, firm… Never mind. Or the way he walked as I followed him along the corridor at work. Okay. So, I’d taken a non-existent—or maybe ever-so-slight—inappropriate boss fantasy right to sleeping in bed with the man. I’d come a long way.

I’d have said my wisdom was on the line, except ending up in his bed rated way worse than unwise. Spelling Mr. Brian as Mr. Brain on company documents was unwise—and stupid. Filing January invoices in December was unwise—and, according to Mr. Brian, worse than stupid. This…this verged on being very, very bad—and so much more than stupid. Unforgiveable, if I forced myself to be honest.

Note to self: Career suicide—never the way to ask for a pay increase.

“What, no ‘good morning, Will’?” He chuckled, and I didn’t know if my sudden goose bumps came from extreme lack of blankets or the unnervingly attractive sound of his amusement.

His laughter, somehow hauntingly familiar and comforting, wrapped me in unexpected safety. He never laughed at the office or, if he did, he went somewhere private to do it. Either way, he never seemed to find anything funny about working.

In our office. With me at his professional beck and call. The fact I relaxed a little in his presence must have been the result of my aspirations to find my inner Zen one day. I channelled Yoda and did imaginary breathing exercises, then clamped down on my bubble of hysteria before it rose any further up my throat. Relaxation, inner calm, and enlightenment? Not likely. I flashed a quick grimace, hoping to trigger the off-switch to my inner-monologue.

“Um. Hi…Will.” My voice came out part mumble, part squeak, as I crouched by the bed, still refusing to look at him as I referred to my always-formal boss by his first name in the most ridiculous of situations.

“Did I scare you?”

I dared a hasty glance, and he arched an eyebrow in amusement. Heat rushed through me, then cold horror as fresh awareness dawned. My buttocks rested on my calves as I squatted. My nipples hardened in the cool air as I huddled outside the covers. I was naked.

The situation couldn’t get worse.

Trying my best for nonchalance, I grasped the closest corner of the duvet and inched it towards me, intent on hiding as much flesh as possible. I released a slow, shallow breath as each fractional movement concealed more of my awkward form.

“Hey!” With laughter in his tone, he snagged the high thread-count covers back to his side of the bed. “You’re making me cold!”

I risked another peek over at him before searing afresh at his identical extreme lack of clothes. Naked…in bed. Oh God, naked in bed with my naked boss. No memory of getting there. And I’d started to grow cold again, too.

Note to self: Things could always get worse. Always.

Cover Reveal and GIVEAWAY: Breathless by Jessica Bayliss

When I worked at Three Worlds Press, I had the great honour to work with Jessica and edit this story. Very sadly, Three Worlds Press has since closed, but happily, Breathless is back! 🙂

And look at its pretty new cover. 🙂

BLURB:

A brush with death brings Leah closer to the ghosts she longs to find and throws her into the arms of the troubled scuba instructor who saves her.

Dale, an Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran, is haunted by his own restless spirits. He’s on a hunt for forgiveness, and the Caribbean Sea is his hunting ground.

The peace they search for lies in the bond they never suspected they shared.

EXCERPTS:

I’m seventy feet below the Caribbean Sea, and I’m out of air.

He breathes with me, using his pace to slow mine. It feels like too much. The stillness. Our breath as one. His touch against my face and unyielding gaze locked onto mine. I want to escape up to safety, but he won’t let me.

All I can do is trust him.

BIO:

They say write what you know, so Jessica Bayliss did. Her story, BREATHLESS, was inspired by her own experience running out of air on a scuba dive—except without all the steamy romance and eerie paranormal happenings. Alas, real life. Obviously, she survived. Her genre-bending fiction holds a little something for everyone. A lover of ghost tales and horror since her days scanning VHS rental shelves—admittedly with eyes half-averted from the gory covers—a touch of the mysterious always finds a home in Jessica’s work. Romance with a dash of supernatural. Horror with a bit of humor. You get the gist. Jessica also writes across age groups and is a firm believer in the motto: there is a new reader born every day, whether young or not-so-young

Look for her upcoming releases: TEN PAST CLOSING, a YA contemporary thriller (Sky Pony Press, Spring 2018), and BROKEN CHORDS, a YA horror novella (Leap Books, October 2017). You can find her story “Care of the Undead Dog” in ZOMBIE CHUNKS, which came out earlier this year. Read about all of Jessica’s books and stories here.
